Obituary: Elizabeth Sumner. Porthcawl teacher taught at local school over four decades

By GEM Community Correspondent in Local People

Popular former Porthcawl Comprehensive School teacher Liz Sumner peacefully passed away on March 8, following a year-long struggle with cancer.

Liz, who was also known at the school as Miss Bisatt and Miss Marks, spent her final days being cared for by the nurses and doctors at Y Bwthyn Newydd, Princess of Wales Hospital.

Liz, a graduate of Trinity College Carmarthen, taught English and drama at the school during four decades and also had a particular role in caring for children with learning difficulties.

She was stage manager of many of the school’s renowned musicals and was secretary of the PTA. Her final role was as head of sixth form, before concluding her career mentoring children in the Youth Focus project.

Following her retirement, she actively engaged in Porthcawl U3A, running adult classes in Play Reading and Keeping Fit, while maintaining her active role in Porthcawl Choral Society.

Liz will be sadly missed by family, friends and thousands of Porthcawl residents, both young and old. Her funeral will be held at All Saints’ Church, Porthcawl at 10.30am on Monday, March 20.

I have known Liz since 1987 a beautiful person inside and out. She was always smiling and always positive. Thinking of Dafydd, Katie and Neil at this extremely sad time.
