Local chess players in International action

This week sees the the start of the 14th South Wales International which takes place at the Park Inn Hotel in Cardiff.

This is a 10 round competition spread over seven days and is also one of the events leading to qualifying for the British Championships taking place at the end of July.

As usual the Barry Chess Club had three entrants into this event - Lee Davis ranked 22nd, Sam Jukes ranked 36th and Nigel Ralphs ranked 14th out of 53 competitors.

Saturday saw two rounds of play. For those players in the top half of the ranking they would expect to win their first match and conversely those in the bottom half would expect to lose.

This is exactly how the first round went - wins for Lee and Nigel and a defeat for Sam against Tim Kett.

In the second round played on Saturday first round winners would be paired with other winners and likewise for losers.

Lee and Nigel were both paired with ‘Masters’, Lee with FM David Ledger and Nigel with the Bulgarian GM Marion Petrov.

Lee had a rating deficit of 257 and Nigel of 348. It was no surprise to see both our Barry players lose.

Sam, however, defeated Kevin O’Rourke so after two rounds all three of our players were on one point from two games.

On Sunday there was only one round of games. Lee earned his second win of the tournament, Nigel drew and Sam had the misfortune to be paired with a much stronger player in Rudy Van Kemenade and lost.

So after 3 rounds of play Lee is tied in 15th place with 2/3, Nigel is tied in 21st place on 1.5/3 and Sam is tied in 36th place on 1/3.

The competition continues all week so more will be reported in next week’s GEM.

The Barry Chess Club meets at 7.30pm each Monday at the West End Club, St. Nicholas Road, Barry CF62 6QY.

The club is open to players of all standards, whether you are interested in playing competitive chess or just the occasional friendly games.

New players are very welcome to just turn up on the night but if you contact one of the club members through the website we can explain what is happening on the night you have in mind, and arrange for someone to greet you on your arrival.
