Captain’s day for The Glamorgan Farmers’ Golf Society was staged last Thursday at a sunny St Athan Golf Club, where 35 members congregated to compete for excellent prizes provided by their captain Ray Thomas, whose late father Russell captained the society 23 years ago in 1994.
Also there to provide hospitality at the halfway point was the captain’s wife, Mrs Lorraine Thomas, ably assisted by close friend Mrs Jayne Evans.
After a very enjoyable afternoon of golf played on a course which again was in excellent condition it seemed fitting that Brian Lakin, a long-standing family friend of the captain, was declared the winner when returning 37 stableford points.
Runner-up with 36 points was David Williams followed by Tony McCarthy with 35 points.
Gwyn Thomas finished in fourth place with 34 points, one point ahead of Bryan Owen.
Nearest the pin on the par-3 holes were Bryan Owen, Keith Gibson, Hugh Williams and also Brian Lakin, who completed a very successful afternoon by also collecting the longest drive prize.
Tony McCarthy correctly guessed 27 balls would fail to make the journey home to collect a bottle of whiskey that raised £75 for Velindre cancer care unit.
The society’s next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, July 27, at St Mellons Golf Club, when members will be participating in the annual pair’s competition kindly sponsored by the Maesglas Veterinary Group.
